A minimum of thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
