Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
