Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest certain decisions from the official, following the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
